Very rightly so. A dog is a faithful animal that gives unconditional love. It does not judge us or hold us to measure. And that is what a group of our students experienced when they visited the Association of Abandoned Animals (AAA) -one of the dog’s sanctuaries situated in Marsa. Just before the Easter holidays, 10 students together with 3 members of the staff, went to AAA to give a special treat to some of these dogs. Upon arrival, the four legged occupiers, over 100 of them, manifested their joy in realizing that there were visitors. Each visitor is welcomed by a volley of exited barks. They are not showing anger. They are just eager to go out for a walk, the long awaited walk. The students themselves were overwhelmed by the amount of abandoned dogs in such a small space. If it is walkies they wanted it is walkies they got. Each one of us was assigned a dog. Equipped with water and good intentions we left for a 2 and a half hour walk. I wonder who benefitted the most from this short excursion. The dogs enjoyed it and showed it. But our boys frolicked and played with their new found four legged friends. Although this friendship was only 2 and a half hour old, farewell was still the hardest part. It was sad to return the dogs to the sanctuary. In the sanctuary they are well fed, kept clean, protected from the elements and from human cruelty that knows no limits. But yet these dogs need a home.
We promised to stick to our commitment of sponsoring 5 dogs annually and that this activity will become part of our school calendar.
